Private Henry Demee

Private Henry Demee, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 25th September 1915, aged 29, during the first day of the Battle of Loos. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of Mrs Barbara Foggo of 16 High Street, Berwick and the husband of Sarah Demee of 10 Askew Crescent, Tweedmouth. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. His Battalion was part of the 9th ( Scottish ) Division. Before enlisting he had been employed by the Tweedside Co-Op as shoemaker and had been a keen footballer playing for West End Hearts. The first photo shows  an actual attack with the troops disappearing into clouds of smoke and gas. This was the first time in the War that the British Army had used gas. The second shows the village of Loos after capture. The artist’s illustration shows a Battalion attack at Loos led by the pipers.
