Company Sergeant Major George Carter

Company Sergeant Major George Richard Carter, ” C ” Coy., 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 30th July 1916, aged 36, during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Until We Meet”. He had been born in Glasgow and was the son of John and Emily Carter of Lewisham, London and the husband of Nora Carter of 10 Park Avenue, Carnoustie. On that day the Battalion were in trenches on the West of the notorious Delville Wood and under severe artillery and machine gun fire. From here they made an unsuccessful attack on strong German positions which caused heavy casualties, 15 Officers and 244 Other Ranks. The photographs show Delville Wood after its capture and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
