Private Edward Whitlie

Private Edward Whitlie, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 18th October 1914, aged 24, in what was popularly though incorrectly known as the ” Race to the Sea ” He was the son of Peter and Sarah Whitlie of 6 Ivy Place, Berwick and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. He fell in an impossible attack on German positions at Beau Puits where the attack was unsupported and over open ground in full view of the enemy. Over 60 casualties were suffered for no gain. His brother Andrew also fell – see above.
