Sergeant David Borthwick

Sergeant ( Observer ) David Borthwick, Royal Air Force. He was killed on operations in France with 18 Squadron R.A.F. on 16th May 1940, aged 26. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Borthwick of Berwick and is buried in Crevecoeur-Sur-L’Escaut Communal Cemetery, nr Cambrai, Nord, France.  The Germans had invaded France on 10th May 1940 and the Squadron flew their Bristol Blenheim light bombers from an airfield near Crecy, France to attack German troop concentrations . He and his fellow crewmen were buried together in the little village cemetery. Unfortunately the twin engined  Blenheims were no match for the Me. BF 109 single engined German fighters and casualties were consequently high.
