Private Charles Erswell

Private Charles Erswell, 24th ( 1st Tyneside Irish ), Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917 and is buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St Laurent Blangy, Arras, France. He fell during the Battle of Arras which began on that day and his Battalion quickly captured their first Objective , the German ” Black Line “, on time. They the went on to take their part of the enemy ” Blue Line ” He had been born in Berwick and had enlisted in the Town. The photograph shows British troops accompanied by a Tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
