Sergeant Charles Couchman

Sergeant Charles William Couchman, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in a Casualty Clearing Station in the village of Godewaresvelde in France on 6th October 1917 of wounds received in Belgium during the Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, Nord, France. He had been born in Surrey and was the husband of Mrs Couchman of the White Horse Inn, Castlegate, Berwick. The photographs show the dire condition of the battlefield due to the fragile Flanders drainage systems being shattered by the incessant shellfire.
