Second Lieutenant Andrew Davidson

Second Lieutenant Andrew Pearson Davidson, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders att.  2nd Battalion. He was killed in action in France on 5th September 1916, aged 21, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Jane and the late George Davidson of Crouch End, London and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. On that date the Battalion occupied front line trenches facing the strong German positions in the village of Ginchy preparing to assault on the following day. Whilst awaiting the order to attack enemy shelling caused numerous casualties. The photograph shows the “village” after its capture and Scottish troops during the Battle with the colour image showing a peaceful Somme landscape today ” with no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
