Private Alexander Lyall

Private Alexander Lyall, 2nd Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry. He was killed in France on 17th February 1917 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. The Battalion was part of the 63rd ( Royal Naval ) Division. This Division had originally been made up from naval and marine reservists who were in excess of what was required to man Royal Navy ships. The Division had served at Gallipoli in 1915 before being transferred to the Western Front where it remained until the end of the War.
