Private James Edward Brown

Private James Edward Brown, 25th Battalion ( 2nd Tyneside Irish ), Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds in Belgium on 21st October 1917 suffered during the Battle of Third Ypres and is commemorated in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium. He was born in Berwick-on-Tweed and had enlisted in Stanley, Co. Durham. The photograph shows some of the atrocious Flanders conditions the troops were expected to fight in. The heavy artillery barrages had destroyed the drainage systems and torrential rains had compounded the dreadful conditions.
