Private George Gray

Private George Gray, 1st/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds in France on 19th September 1915 and is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted in Berwick. His Battalion had been holding front line trenches No. 70 and 71 near Chappelle D’Armentiers from 6th -18th September and had casualties of 2 killed and 6 wounded during that time. The photograph shows the Memorial raised to the 50th ( Northumbrian ) Division of which the Battalion was part until February 1918 when it was transferred to the 42nd ( East Lancashire ) Division as the Pioneer Battalion. It was erected near the village of Wieltje in the Ypres Salient near where the Division had fought its first action of the War on 26th April 1915.
