Private George Matthewson

Private George A. Matthewson. ( This is the only one listed on the C.W.G.C. site ) 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 9th October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Alnwick and was the son of George Matthewson. Ground conditions were vey bad due to the Flanders drainage systems being destroyed by the incessant shelling were very bad and the photographs give some idea of the desolate quagmire facing the troops.
