Private William Lauder

Private William A.Lauder, 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. He was killed in action in Belgium on 5th June 1916 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He was the son of Janet Lauder of Partinhall, Burnmouth, Ayton. He fell in the Battle of Mount Sorrell in the Sanctuary Wood sector of the Ypres Salient where the Germans made a series of strong attacks mainly against the Canadian Corps who were holding the frontline trenches in this area. The Battalion lost 367 Officers and men including their Commanding Officer.
