Private James Donoghue

Private James Donoghue, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Loos on 25th September 1915, aged 25. He was the son of John and Annie Donoghue of Sisterpath, Duns and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The first photo shows an actual attack with the troops disappearing into a ghostly cloud of gas and smoke. This was the first time in the War that the British Army had used gas. The second photo shows the village of Loos after capture. The artist’s nightmarish illustration shows troops at Loos wearing their gas hoods and using primitive grenades.
