Leading Stoker Abraham Spouse

Leading Stoker Abraham Spouse, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea on 21st July 1940 aboard H.M. Submarine “Phoenix” aged 25. He was the son of William and Grace Spouse of Burnmouth and the brother of Robert Spouse above. He  is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.   The submarine was a ” Parthian” Class boat launched in 1929 at the shipyard of Cammell-Laird and displaced 1,760 long tons. The “Phoenix”, under the command of Lieutenant Commander G.H. Howell, was on patrol in the Mediterranean when on 8th July 1940 the submarine had attacked the Italian Battleship” Cavour ” but without success. On 16th July, off Sicily, the submarine attacked an Italian torpedo boat the” Albatross “. The torpedoes however missed the target and the ” Phoenix ” was sunk with all 53 hands in the counter attack.
