Private Robert Jeffrey

Private Robert J. Jeffrey, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots. He died in hospital in Malta on 13th November 1916, aged 28, of wounds received in action during the Salonica campaign. He had been born in Morebattle and was the son of Mrs Annie J.Chapman of Woodhead, Ancrum and is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.  He had enlisted as a regular Soldier in the Royal Scots in 1906  and was with them in India when War broke out. The Battalion went to France in December 1914 but was transferred to Salonika a year later. It is likely he was wounded in the Battle of Bala in the Struma valley where the Battalion captured the Bulgarian positions in the village of Zir. 2 Officers and 39 Other Ranks were killed with another 10 wounded. After being wounded he contracted malaria and whilst being evacuated to Malta he died aboard the hospital ship.
