Lance Sergeant James Young M.M.

Lance Sergeant James Young, M.M. ,1st Battalion, Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ). He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 22, on 13th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensives on the River Lys and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Ploegsteert, Flanders, Belgium.  He had been born in Ancrum and was the only son of the late Adam and Mrs Young of Hundalee Smithy, Jedburgh and had enlisted in the Town.  He had joined the 2nd Battalion, Cameronians in France in March 1915 and at some stage he had been transferred to the 1st Battalion.  He had won the Military Medal for gallantry in the field on the 21st/22nd March 1918.
