Private James Yule

Private James Yule, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He was a Regular Soldier and was killed in action in Belgium on 29th October 1914 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.  He had been born in Grantshouse and was the son of Janet and the late James Yule of Abbey St Bathans. He fell in the fierce fighting near Gheluvelt where very powerful German attacks were brought to a standstill.  However an enemy breakthrough on the right meant the Battalion had to fight for its life. It held on but the cost was 8 Officers and 232 Other Ranks. ( His brother William also fell, see below ).The photos show the Scots Guards in Belgium in late 1914.
