Master Harry Chessman Walker

Master Harry Chessman Walker, Merchant Marine. He was lost at sea on 7th February 1943, aged 46, when his ship was torpedoed and sunk. He was Master of the S.S. “Harmala” (London) which was a British Cargo Steamer of 5,730 tons built in 1935 by Lithgows of Port Glasgow.   On 7th February 1943 when en route from Rio de Janeiro to Middlesborough in Convoy SC-118 and carrying a cargo of 8,500 tons of iron ore it was sunk by German U-614 about 750 miles west of Ireland. He and 31 crew members, ten gunners and 1 naval signalman were lost. The remaining 11 crew members were picked up by FFL “Lobelia” and landed at Greenock. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. He was the son of John and Mary Annie Walker and husband of Annette Walker, Yetholm, Roxburghshire. ( U-614 was sunk with all hands in the North Atlantic on 29th July 1943 by depth charges from  an R.A.F. Wellington  ).
