Lennel Kirk

The Coldstream Community Trust obtained a grant to carry out a feasibility study of the old Lennel Kirk which is now in a dilapidated state. The study was carried out on 16th December 2014 and the report is currently with the Trust. The study was funded by Historic Scotland (HS) and it appears that HS are going to consider three things:-

(1) whether to convert the kirk from a Listed B building to an Ancient and Scheduled Monument;

(2) a restoration programme to repair the kirk; and

(3) whether they can help with funding

The kirk has not been used since 1705, it was built in around 1120 and has deteriorated ever since. In more recent times, there has been doubt as to the ownership; the Lennel Estates, Scottish Borders Council (SBC), the Church and others have no records of ownership and even Registers for Scotland couldn't give a definite answer. HS aren't that bothered as long as a local Community Trust would manage it in the future.

The kirk has such historical value; so let's hope it can be repaired.
