West Row 26 – 4 Liddle/Young/Romanes

Erected by MARY LIDDLE in loving memory of her mother MARY LIDDLE who died 26th July 1910 aged 75 years.

Also ROBERT LIDDLE her grandfather and MARGARET YOUNG his wife.

Also her husband ALEXANDER ROMANES who died at Galashiels 27th August 1931.

Commentary

Robert Liddle was born in Norham, Northumberland in 1790 to George Liddle and Alison hall . The Liddle or Liddell family originated from Duns and Coldstream. Robert Married Margaret Young  in Norham 7/6/1817, she was descended from the Lockie family.  The couple went to Coldstream after the wedding.  Robert died of apoplexy on the 3/6/1856 and Margaret on the 28/11/1866  and both were buried in the Lennel Kirkyard.

Altogether they had eight children all born in Coldstream:-

George born 1819 he married Isabella Oliver of Yetholm, Roxburghshire and he went to Newcastle upon Tyne.
she hade two
Robert born c1823 he married Isabella Kelly, he emigrated to Ballarat in Australia. |He died on the 15/3/1870.

James born c1826 it is recorded that he emigrated with Robert.

William born c1829 he married Sarah Kelly and he too emigrated to Australia.

James born c1831 stayed in Coldstream but became a pauper and on the 9/8/1860 he died and was buried in the Liddle grave in Lennel Kirkyard

Margaret born c1832 (She was my 2 x Grandmother) there is a record that Margaret Young was not her mother instead a servant on the Barclay estate called Jane,  In the 1850s she migrated to London. In 1853 she married Joseph Dunn, Margaret died in 1889.

Mary born 1835 never married and stayed in Coldstream, she had two illegitimate children Robert born 1857 and Mary Thompson born 1865. She was a dressmaker bny trade and she died on the 26/7/1910 at 1 Nursery Road of Hypostatic Pneumonia and was buried in Lennel Kirkyard.

Jane born 1838 she emigrated to Australia late 1858 early 1859. She died in 1913.
