Erected by GEORGE SMITH The Hirsel in memory of CATHRINE his wife who died 29th Nov 1842 aged 34 years. Also MARGARET his daughter who died 6 Nov 1842 aged 6 years. JAMES his son who died 1st Dec 1842 aged 2 years. Also ELIZABETH his daughter who died 13th Dec 1842 aged 4 years. Also the above GEORGE SMITH who died at Crooks on 2nd July 1866 in the 56th year of his life. Also PETER A. SMITH son of above died 2nd Sep 1875 aged 16 years.On the rear of the headstone is mentioned - In memory of JANET PURVES wife of George Smith died 29th July 1898 aged 86 years interred in Booranda Cemetery, Melbourne; Her sister HELEN PURVES  died 5th October 1879 aged 70 years; DAVID INGLIS PURVES their brother who died 1st January 1893 aged 74 years interred at Stitchel.

Commentary

In 1841 George Smith was a Steward at The Hirsel.  He lived with wife Catherine, daughters Margaret and Elizabeth and one year old son James.

Other information obtained - George Smith was born at Kithhall, Aberdeen, his occupation a Land Steward and he lived at 6 Crooks Farm House. His wife was born at Duns Berwickshire. Janet his second wife was born at Duns, she had 8 children in 1861 they are recorded as living at the Crooks Farm House.
