In Loving Memory of FRANCIS SWAN, who died at New Harperridge, Jan. 26th 1922, aged 58 years. MARTHA FAIRLEY, wife of the above who died Nov. 14th 1896 aged 29 years. Pte. WILLIAM SWAN, 6th K.O.Y.L.I. their son who died of wounds, Aug. 24th 1917. MARGARET SWAN, wife of the above FRANCIS SWAN, who died at New Harperridge, 22nd Aug. 1942 aged 76 years.

Military record

Private William Swan, 6th Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was died in France on 24th August 1917 of wounds received in action during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was the son of Francis and Martha Swan of New Harperridge, Cornhill-on-Tweed and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium.

He is also commemorated on his parents headstone in Cornhill Churchyard

Commentary

Francis was born in Norham and was described as a Grocers Delivery Van Man. Francis and Margaret had 6 children James, who was a Salmon fisherman, Mary E Swan who waas a domestic servant,Agnes, Robert, Alison and Francis.  Margaret was born at Lucker Northumberland
